Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for space exploration applications : Influence of the ambient pressure on the calibration curves prepared from soil and clay samples

چکیده
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) technique for stand-off detection of geological samples for use on landers and rovers to Mars, and for other space applications. For space missions, LIBS analysis capabilities must be investigated and instrumental development is required to take into account constraints such as size, weight, power and environmental atmosphere (pressure and ambient gas) imposed on flight instruments. In this paper, we study the in-situ LIBS method at reduced pressure (7 Torr CO2 to simulate the Martian atmosphere) and near vacuum (50 mTorr to simulate the Moon or asteroids’ pressure) as well as at atmospheric pressure in air

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Elemental Analysis in Environmental, Cultural Heritage and Space Applications: A Review of Methods and Results
Analytical applications of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), namely optical emission spectroscopy of laser-induced plasmas, have been constantly growing thanks to its intrinsic conceptual simplicity and versatility. Qualitative and quantitative analysis can be performed by LIBS both by drawing calibration lines and by using calibration-free methods and some of its features, so as fas...
متن کاملThe effect of self-absorption correction using internal reference on determining heavy metals concentration by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy
The identification and concentration of heavy metals, which may be so harmful for the body, is determined by the method of calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy using a special strategy. First, the plasma temperature is obtained using the Boltzmann plot. Then, a line with an inappreciable self-absorption is considered for each element as the reference. The modified intensities o...

متن کاملDependence of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy results on pulse energies and timing parameters using soil simulants.
The dependence of some LIBS detection capabilities on lower pulse energies (<100 mJ) and timing parameters were examined using synthetic silicate samples. These samples were used as simulants for soil and contained minor and trace elements commonly found in soil at a wide range of concentrations. For this study, over 100 calibration curves were prepared using different pulse energies and timing...
متن کاملImproving the clay, silt and sand of soil prediction by removing the influence of moisture on reflectance using EPO
Moisture is one of the most important factors that affects soil reflectance spectra. Time and spatial variability of soil moisture leads to reducing the capability of spectroscopy in soil properties estimation. Developing a method that could lessen the effect of moisture on soil properly prediction using spectrometry, is necessary. This paper utilises an external parameter orthogonalisation (EP...
